McGrath

In 1945, Raymond McGrath, born 1942 in Queens, moved to Buscher Avenue in Valley Stream. He attended Holy Name of Mary parochial school through the eighth grade and graduated Valley Stream South High in 1959 (he attended Central High until South opened in Decemeber 1955). McGrath received his B.S. in Education from SUNY Brockport, and his M.A. in Education from NYU. He taught on both the high school and college levels before entering government service.

From 1976 to1980, McGrath represented Valley Stream in the New York State Legislature. In 1980, he was elected to Congress, where he served as a Republican Congressman and a Washington lobbyist. He served residents of the Valley Stream area (Fifth Congressional District) for six terms, from 1981 - 1992 (he declined a seventh term). McGrath was a member of the House Ways and Means Committee, responsible for tax, international trade, and federal social programs.

After leaving government he became president of a trade association that represented beer brewers. The organization, which lobbied for certain tax concessions because of the economic benefit on local, state, and federal levels, also made donations and grants to researchers studying alcohol consumption and its impact on society.
